LNOPF at TORRENS ISLAND

The Les Nesbitt Orchid Propagation Facility (LNOPF) commenced in July 2020 when NOSSA rented the old hospital kitchen at Oakden. This site was always viewed as a temporary measure that enabled us to assess whether such a facility was needed which was soon seen to be the case.

In May 2024, due to increasing rent, we closed the Oakden site; put everything into storage whilst we looked for an affordable location. We were amazed at the support and offers we received from so many different groups. In 2025, through the assistance of the Friends of Torrens Island, we secured a building and land within the Quarantine Station on Torrens Island.

Currently we are in the process of making the site workable. The backyard has been prepared ready to install the shade-houses while at the same time the building, a beautiful 1927 supervisor’s house has been prepared for housing the propagation equipment. This process has been slow but steady as we discover the history of this building.

We are now ready to welcome helpers and volunteers in the next step of the LNOPF journey.
